MAMI

MAMI stands for the management of small and nutritionally at-risk infants under six months and their mothers. Nearly half of all child deaths are due to undernutrition and infants under six months are the most vulnerable. ‘Small and nutritionally at-risk include infants' under 6 months (u6m) who have a low birth weight (preterm infants, small for gestational age) and/or infants u6m who are wasted, stunted and/or underweight. These infants are often described as malnourished. Effective management of small and nutritionally at-risk infants under six months and their mothers is essential.

The MAMI GTWG was established in 2022 to answer questions and provide information related to technical gaps in guidance, or its translation in challenging contexts, regarding the management of small and nutritionally at-risk infants under six months and their mothers (MAMI). The MAMI Global Network is acting as the MAMI Global Technical Working Group. This role is consistent with the MAMI Global Networks priorities, commitments and vision as reflected in its Five-Year strategy (2021-2025). The MAMI Global Network is an established active community of local, national and international implementers, researchers and policy-makers working together to improve policy, evidence and practice for small and nutritionally at-risk infants under six months and their mothers. It is coordinated by Emergency Nutrition Network (ENN) and co-chaired by ENN and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The MAMI Global Network’s primary practitioner’s resource material is the MAMI Care Pathway, which guides practitioners on identifying, assessing and managing small and nutritionally at-risk infants under six months and their mothers.

The MAMI GTWG is chaired by the MAMI Global network Coordinator and a co-chair from the Network’s membership.

As outlined in the group’s terms of reference, the focus of the MAMI GTWG for 2022 will be to:

Provide technical advice when a request is escalated to the GTWG
Develop, coordinate or contribute to the development of new interim consensus-driven guidance
Bring to the attention of the Alliance any important unaddressed technical issues
Identify research priorities
Collaborate with the Alliance in identifying knowledge management (KM) and learning need
Collaborate and actively seek cross-sectoral collaboration and commitment to support outputs, including the Health Cluster and the Global Protection Cluster
Collaborate with the Alliance in identifying and facilitating country-to-country sharing of experiences, including updates from the Alliance’s MAMI advisor (Save the Children)
Periodically update the Alliance and GNC partners on our work
